Proxies — Mixes
If you're using proxies, you won't have 100% security, it gaves everytime a point where you can be a victim. To avoid a little bit to this, it gave the "mixes".
Mixes means, not only one person connects on youtube.com via the proxy but several. At the picture you'll see the 3 black squares and the other grey packet, these are the packets(3 short and 1 long packet).
Theses packets are sending to the "mix" (look at pic), and will generated randomly packets, so they can goto google.com, wordpress.com, youtube.com etc.
It can also be a another queqe, does not matter and they must not all sends to youtube.com

What the mix will do is he sends random packet to anywhere, that mean, if no client sends any packet then the mix will adds and "dummy" element, so an attacker will think it's an normal packet, from youtube.com it will be deleted. Through this no attack is currently working.
Nobody knows who sends which data, except of the mixer, so that is the reason why the NSA will add sometimes some exit nodes.
Disadvantes are DDoS Attacks and maybe more time for loading pages. So anonymity has his price.
